In his first production at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, Yorgos Nanouris stages Euripides’ “Iphigenia in Tauris” as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival 2021, on 2, 3 and 4 July, in a translation by Giorgos Ioannou.
He chooses to work once again with Lena Papaligoura and Michalis Sarantis, as well as with Haris Alexiou, who returns to the theatre for her first appearance at Epidaurus. Nikos Psarras, Pygmalion Dadakaridis, Promitheas Aleiferopoulos, Kitty Paitazoglou and a six-member chorus also star in this company.
What does it mean to be an exile and a stranger? How does a person escape their past and their fate? Amid the ruins of the Peloponnesian War, in a time of crisis – one that recalls, in a way, our own – Euripides writes “Iphigenia in Tauris”, extolling the grandeur of sibling love and the great values he sees being lost.
