Haris Alexiou traces the history of Greek song
March 6, 2025

How many lives does a record hold? How many stories? Other people’s stories, stories of our own. Other people’s stories that became our own.

ERT and Haris Alexiou invite us to discover the fascinating history of Greek recorded music through a 12-episode documentary series, “100 Chronia Elliniki Diskografia” (“100 Years of Greek Recording”), coming to public television in the new television season.

A story spanning more than 100 years. From the birth of the Greek record industry to the present day.

From the days of the phonograph and the itinerant “gramophone men” of the early 20th century, to the 1960s, the era of “singles” and “jukeboxes”… And from there to long-playing vinyl records, compact discs and the internet.

Our guide on this journey is Haris Alexiou, the leading singer of her generation and one of the most beloved figures in Greek culture, who has left an indelible mark on Greek music and on the history of Greek recording.

Drawing on ERT’s invaluable Archive, as well as on the testimony of people who lived through the golden years of the Greek record industry, the series traces the entire course of Greek song as it was engraved in the grooves of records.

The documentary series “100 Chronia Elliniki Diskografia” is a journey through time, starring all those who bound their lives to Greek recording and who, with inspiration and passion, created the miracle of Greek music.

On this journey, we want you as our fellow travellers.
