A seduction, a bomb, a revolution
Fashion and absolute nakedness
For a second year, and with a renewed company, the National Theatre of Greece presents “Operetta”, a performance inspired by Witold Gombrowicz’s Operetta, directed by Nikos Karathanos.
In an otherworldly realm, where the characters’ innermost longing to return to immaturity dictates their every move, a strange and poetic story unfolds.
The imaginative, subversive and timeless Operetta by the great Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz adopts the lightness of this musical genre and, with its sweeping humour, undermines false political, moral and ideological models. At the same time it exposes the absurdity of those who embody them, and proposes the superiority of simplicity and “nakedness” over the emptiness of every passing fashion.
Count Aristaios plans to seduce the beautiful Albertina. The success of his scheme sets off a chain of unexpected and outrageous events, in which fashion coexists with revolution, and the corruption of clothing battles the innocence of nakedness.
